What comes in your pregnancy belly cast kit?

Our pregnancy belly cast kit is manufactured by ProudBody. I used ProudBody's kit for both of my pregnancies and was thrilled with how easy it was to make a belly cast using their kit. The kit includes:

1. five rolls of four-inch wide by five yards long premium-quality plaster casting materia. This is equivalent to a 5 foot x 5 foot sheet of material. The casting material conforms to the health requirements of ASTM D-4236. There is no heat reaction when using the casting material.

2. all-natural belly casting lubricant

3. a pair of Nitrile (non-latex) gloves

4. sanding screen (to smooth out your belly cast after it dries)

5. plastic drop cloth (making a Pregnancy Belly Cast is a lot of fun, but is also messy!)

6. easy and thorough instructions written in English, French and Spanish

7. decorating sheet with hundreds of decorating ideas.

The kit contains enough casting material for even the largest of bellies--25 square feet equivalent to a five foot by five foot sheet of casting material!

Is it hard to make a pregnancy belly cast?

No. It is incredibly simple and in just 30 minutes you will have created your own unique work of art. There are easy-to-follow instructions written in English, French and Spanish included in the kit.

When do most Moms make a pregnancy belly cast?

Most moms make their belly casts anywhere between 34 to 36 weeks of pregnancy but we have had some that have made them as early as 30 weeks of pregnancy and some as late as full-term. It really is a matter of personal preference.

Will it harm my baby or irritate my skin to make a pregnancy belly cast?

All of the products included in the pregnancy belly cast kit are safe and non-toxic. In addition, the casting material conforms to the health requirements of ASTM-D4236 and requires no additional labeling as mandated by the Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA). Does it hurt to make a pregnancy belly cast?

Not at all. A container of all-natural belly casting lubricant is included in each kit. You apply the lubricant over the portion of your body you would like to cast and as the cast dries, it pulls away easily from your skin.

The all-natural belly casting lubricant provides an excellent barrier between mom’s skin and the casting material so the belly cast is easy to remove from mom’s skin after it has dried. Plus, the lubricant is body and earth-friendly.

The lubricant is made of all-natural ingredients: beeswax, cocoa butter, olive oil and vitamin E.  It is easily washed from mom’s skin once her belly cast has been removed or she can allow it absorb into her skin.

What can I do with my finished pregnancy belly cast?

How you decorate your finished pregnancy belly cast depends on your taste. You can leave it in its original white form for a simple, yet elegant look or decorate it in any way imaginable. A lot of moms hang it up as a wall decoration in baby's nursery (you can easily poke a couple of holes in the top and thread a pretty ribbon through the holes).

Some ideas for decorating include painting, decoupage, applying sequins, feathers, dried flowers, photographs or small, pretty, cut stones or glass. A popular way to decorate a belly cast is with bronze spray paint. You also can wait to decorate it until after your baby is born and apply paint to your baby's hands and feet and put the prints on your belly cast. When your baby is old enough, you could even decorate it together. Your imagination is truly the limit.

Why don't you include gesso or paints in the kit?

Gesso and paints were not included in the kit because there are so many different ways to decorate a belly cast besides painting. Some moms like to leave them in their original white form for a simple, yet elegant look while others like to decoupage, tile or hot glue items to their casts. So, to keep the price economical and to not have you pay for something you might not want or use, it was decided not to included finishing materials in the kit.

What types of paint should I use to paint my belly cast?

If you decide to paint your belly cast once it dries, we recommend the use of either acrylic or latex paints. Either type of paint is readily available at your local craft store. You should also apply a layer of gesso (acrylic priming paint) and allow it to dry before painting your belly cast. Gesso seals your belly cast and prepares the surface for painting. We recommend the use of a sponge brush to apply the gesso. Cheaper bristle brushes have the tendency to lose their bristles and stick onto the surface of the belly cast.

What is gesso and when should I use it?

Gesso is also called acrylic priming paint. It is readily available at your local craft store. You should apply a layer of gesso and allow it to dry if you want to paint your belly cast. Some moms who decide to leave their belly casts white also apply a layer of gesso to seal it. Gesso has the consistency and look of Elmer's Glue and dries clear.

How long does it take for me to receive my order?

Orders are generally shipped by no later than the next business day. Standard shipping typically takes from 1-5 business days, depending on the shipping destination.

Standard shipping--FedEx Ground or USPS Priority Mail

We ship via FedEx Ground throughout the continental United States. If an order is being shipped to Hawaii or Alaska, to a military APO/FPO address, to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam or any of the other U.S. protectorates, then standard shipping is done by USPS Priority Mail.
